Project

The Mycterials biodesign project joins synthetic biology, engineering and design to create sustainable fungal biomaterials. Our project challenges previous perceptions on fungal based durable and functional designs by moving away from conventional brick-based mycelium production. 

Our vision joins targeted fungal engineering with digitally programmable techniques, which would open up a vast range of applications through bottom-up design without scale limitations. We hope to provide new, creative tools for future bio-innovators to make their own contributions to designing sustainable everyday objects, artefacts, architectural constructs and buildings.

At its core, Mycterials represents a next generation movement in synthetic biology, in which multiple biological, engineering and design disciplines intersect to create previously impossible constructs.

We are simply the first step in the evolution of this exciting field.
